History of Board of Health

The Williams County Health District was formed in 1919, as a result of a law passed by the Ohio Legislature, which required all townships and villages to merge their public health departments into a single board of health.  In 1987, the Bryan City Board of Health and the Williams County General Board of Health merged to become the Williams County Combined Board of Health creating a single health district for the county.

Who selects the Board of Health

The chairman of each township, mayors of each village, and the Bryan City Council appoint the Williams County Health District Board of Health members who serve for five-year terms.

Responsibilities of the Board of Health

State law requires the board to report and take measures to control disease, enforce state public health laws and promote health and well being within the health district.  The board is also responsible for the department’s budget, hiring a health commissioner who serves as the executive officer of the district and is responsible for day-to-day activities.
