Private Water Systems Program

Permits are required for all water systems in the state of Ohio.  If the proposed well is for a location that will serve more than 25 individuals, either on a daily basis or a transit basis, or has more than 15 service connections, a permit is obtained by through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.  All other wells, such as those typical for a residential dwelling, are required to obtain a permit through their local health department.  Private water system permits are good for one year from date of issuance.

The Williams County Health Department has records on private water systems dating from 1983 to present.  These records contain such information as well location, depth of well, gallons per minute of water, and geological formations encountered in the drilling process as noted on the well log.  Water sample information on these systems is also available.

Water samples are available through the health department for a charge for bacterial and chemical parameters.  Sampling is available on Mondays and Wednesdays by the health department staff.  Do not drop off containers of water; special containers are required for sampling.

General questions on water systems and water availability can also be answered by the environmental staff of the Williams County Health Department.
